Social Media Content Creators Fueling Parallel Market for Unlicensed Weight-Loss Drug

An underground economy for unlicensed slimming medications is being driven by TikTok fitness influencers and sellers on communication apps, according to new investigations.

Investigational Treatment Acquiring Traction Online

The experimental drug, which remains in clinical trials, is being promoted by social media influencers for its alleged fat-burning effects. Viewers are encouraged to message these accounts directly for supplier links, while also obtaining discount codes.

Thriving Commerce on Social Networks

Additionally, a robust market exists on messaging services, where communities with thousands of participants share comparison photos, injection guides and claims of rapid UK delivery. Sellers promote the substance there before directing customers to other platforms for transactions.

Learning About Retatrutide

Retatrutide is an investigational injectable developed by American pharmaceutical company Eli Lilly. The treatment affects three gut hormones – GLP-1, GIP and glucagon. Early trials indicate it could assist patients lose up to 25% of their total weight. Nicknamed the “triple G”, the drug is being promoted online as the next Ozempic.

Medical Experts Voice Concerns

However, physicians and chemists have warned that the sale of what is still an unapproved medication in the UK is a cause for concern and could lead to individuals administering products of unknown origin.

Several professionals said the demand for the experimental drug could be linked to the increasing price of approved weight loss treatments such as Mounjaro.

Regulatory Position and Implementation

Selling the unapproved drug on social media or Telegram is illegal in the UK, as it is an unapproved medication that must not be marketed or supplied for human use under the British medical regulations.

Some influencers try to sidestep the rules by referring to the substance as a “research chemical” or citing it as “not for human consumption”. The substance is not a controlled drug, but promotion and supply can still violate pharmaceutical, marketing, and consumer laws, risking penalties, legal action or prison.

Platform Response and Content Removal

According to TikTok, the service has removed violative material and banned associated keywords and search suggestions. The company said it was dedicated to maintaining the service safe and allocating resources in enhancing enforcement strategies.

Digital Trading Activities

Research also found groups with up to nine thousand participants marketing retatrutide using Telegram's built-in discovery tool, which functions like a online catalog. Typing “retatrutide” immediately displays groups with thousands of members, populated with photos of weight loss, glowing reviews and step-by-step instructions for preparing or injecting at home.

After moments of entering one community, a vendor shared WhatsApp details, where most purchases take place. The vendor sent an guidebook and guaranteed shipping within 48 hours. When asked whether the product was authentic, one seller responded: “You can’t be sure.” Another shared a image of a supposed laboratory certificate. None inquired about weight, medical conditions or previous experience.

Item Information and Pricing

Within these communities, messages show black plastic parcels with postal service stickers, stating to contain new batches. One communication read: “It took eight of us to load them this morning.”

Buyers can select between dry substance containers, prepared at home with sterile water, or ready-to-use pens typically sold at 160 pounds for 20 milligrams. When asked how long a pen should last, vendors give contradictory answers varying between a several days to “depends on your body”.

Platform Moderation and Safety Measures

A spokesperson for Telegram said it actively monitored dangerous content on its platform including content that encouraged the “misuse of controlled medications”. The company added that it removed “millions of pieces of harmful content each day”.

Medical Professional Cautions

“Individuals are administering materials they can’t verify. Although the science behind this drug is sound, these online products may not include what they advertise,” stated a pharmacy expert, the head of pharmacy at a pharmacy service.

Dr Crystal Wyllie of Asda Online Doctor linked the increase in interest to recent cost increases for approved weight-loss drugs such as Mounjaro. “With prices increasing, patients are using social media. But fake injections are highly dangerous. You cannot know what’s contained or whether the conditions they were produced in was sterile,” she explained.

Her staff has already seen patients harmed by self-injection from unverified suppliers. “We recognize the frustration, but buying from messaging apps or WhatsApp is gambling with your health,” stated Wyllie. “These materials could be impure or improperly measured.”

Manufacturer Statement

A spokesperson from the pharmaceutical company stated retatrutide was in third stage research studies and had not been evaluated or authorized by any regulatory agency anywhere in the world. “Therefore at this time no one can sell [it] for personal consumption,” they said, noting that any item “misleadingly claiming itself as a Lilly experimental product not yet authorized … may subject patients to possibly significant medical dangers”.
