A group of seven accused members of Germany's left-wing extremist group stand trial over series of attacks

Seven individuals allegedly belonging to the German far-left militant group Antifa Ost began their trial on Tuesday, facing charges for attacks targeting far-right activists that earned them the moniker “the hammer group”.

International terrorist designation and legal charges

Recently, the United States designated Antifa Ost as a terrorist organization together with several other left-wing extremist and anarchist groups.

Authorities in Germany claim the group was behind attacks on sites in Germany and neighboring Hungary between 2018 and 2023. Included in the allegations is the repeated targeting of a restaurant owner in Thuringia, whose venue was known as a gathering spot for far-right supporters.

Some suspects are said to have using hammers against suspected far-right members, causing several with serious injuries.

Trial details and international connections

The trial involving six men and one woman is scheduled to continue until mid-2026 in the eastern city of Dresden. Two defendants, named as Johann G and Paul M., are additionally accused for attacks in the Hungarian capital during early 2023, coinciding with an annual event called the “day of honor” that attracts rightwing extremists from throughout the continent.

Separately, a different German individual, Maja T, is facing trial in the Hungarian judicial system for four counts of attempted assault against far-right activists in the lead-up to the same rally in 2023.

Regional context and organizational structure

Eastern Germany has long been a hotbed for both right-wing extremist and anti-immigration youth organizations, as well as the often militant anti-fascist networks that oppose them.

Authorities characterize Johann G as a high-ranking member within the organization, tasked with organizing violent acts and bringing in new members.

Together with Paul M., he is alleged to have arranged training sessions where leftwing extremists practised combat techniques and rehearsed attacks. At depots overseen by Paul M, the network reportedly stockpiled hammers, irritant sprays, concealment items and mobile phones.

Previous convictions and international reactions

A different activist formerly involved with the organization, Lina E, emerged as a symbolic figure within some far-left activist circles following her conviction in 2023 for attacks on suspected right-wing individuals.

America's terrorist listing makes group members barred from entering the US, freezes any assets they could possess within the American economy and makes it illegal providing material support to them.

Germany's far-right Alternative for Germany welcomed the US decision and called on the government in Berlin to follow suit. In contrast, the country's diplomatic office simply stated it had “acknowledged” of the US designation.

“The danger posed by the organization has substantially diminished lately. Key leaders and particularly violent members have either already been convicted or are in custody.”
